Spens Cup 1909

Two years ago Stirling Chess Club, which had played in the Richardson Cup competition from the start, resigned their place owing to the difficulty of carrying out the matches by reason of having only a limited number of players available, who were skilled enough to take part in them. This season, however, the club entered the Spens Memorial competition, which, being conducted on the "knockout" principle, instead of the league system, as in the Richardson tournament, entails fewer matches and less travelling, and have won the cup, this being the first time that a club outside Edinburgh or Glasgow have done so. [Not correct: Helensburgh CC won the Spens in the first year of the competition, 1902. AMcG]

At the close of playing time for the match (held in Falkirk), Stirling was leading 3½-2½. The game on board four was undecided, and had to be sent for adjudication, the result later given as a draw.
