Spens Cup 1953-54The members of Wardie Residents (Edinburgh) must have felt that they fully deserved their victory in the competition, after what they went through. The first match against Yarrow ended 2½-2½ with two games for adjudication. The Glasgow Herald then reported that the results of the adjudications made Yarrow the winners by 4-3. A later report then suggested that the result may be cancelled "as there appears to have been a misunderstanding over one of the unfinished games." The result was later changed to 3½-3½, which necessitated a replay, won 4-3 by Wardie as shown below.
The final had to be replayed after the first match was tied. Even then, things were not decided immediately for after four hours play the score stood at 2½-1½ for Wardie, with three games for adjudication. This resulted in two wins being awarded to Central and one win to Wardie, with another tied match. However, in following the rules of the competition, the seventh board result had to be cancelled, leaving Wardie Residents the winners by 3½-2½.
