The finals of the SCA team competitions were played at Grangemouth on Saturday 8 April.
The Richardson Cup looked very finely balanced with holders Glasgow Polytechnic possibly slight favourites. However, it was Edinburgh West who took the lead when Byrne blundered a piece against Farrell in a promising position. Soon after, Redpath added a second point with a good victory against Watt. However, Ahmann then won well against McInally and the tide began to turn in favour of Polytechnic with Shaw winning on time in a very favourable position. All four remaining games passed the time control, but then Kirk put Polytechnic ahead when Gillam's attempts to recoup a material disadvantage failed and Reid won too many of Buchanan's pawns. This left Edinburgh West with little hope as although Grant was pressing for a win, Davis was exerting very strong pressure which eventually produced a fine win. Finally, Grant lost on time in a position where the draw was there for the asking to leave Polytechnic with a clear but slightly flattering 6-2 victory.
The Spens Cup final provided a very close battle as Kilmarnock took a two point lead and looked to be favourites, but the match then turned on the Doherty - Hamilton game where black had queen for rook but was severely tied up and proved unable to rectify this before white's active pieces required an excessive return of material to prevent mate. Wins on board 6 and then board 1 gave Inverclyde Central the victory which contrasts oddly with their relegation from Division 2 of the Glasgow League.
The other two events unfortunately turned into non-events. In the Jack Campbell Rosebowl, Irvine Porthead were unable to field a team - too many of their players at work - and Edinburgh Civil Service won by default. In the Robertson Cup, a contest was expected but Perth did not appear through a misunderstanding (and an undelivered letter) and the Wandering Dragons ladies had to settle for an all-play-all among themselves.
