The finals of the Chess Scotland team competitions were played at Grangemouth on Saturday 20 April.
In the Richardson Cup the two clubs were very evenly matched on grading and for quite a time the match seemed finely balanced. Glasgow Polytechnic took the lead when Davis saw more accurately through a combination and won a piece from Redpath. There then followed some draws of various sorts before a second win came for Poly when Perez's pieces sprang to life from a fairly passive situation to produce a combinative win. By the time control it was clear that Edinburgh West would not win the two remaining games as Grant was hopelessly lost against Swan and when his wife Keti blundered in a rather unusual R+opposite B ending against Shaw, Poly had gained a decisive victory. This gives the club a fourth successive victory, a feat exceeded only by the five achieved by Glasgow in the 1960s.
In the Spens Cup final Shettleston marked their return to the Richardson after a long absence with a convincing victory over a weakened Phones side. Bryson and Nolan produced tactic-based wins while Muir ground out a long ending with a final zugzwang.
The Jack Campbell Rosebowl final soon looked very favourable for Holy Cross who soon had a number of advantageous games and recorded their third win in the event. Donohue's tactical finish was the highlight.
