GM Paul Motwani (pictured) won the 109th Scottish Championship in Stirling with an unbeaten score of 7.5/9. This was Motwani's 6th title win and takes him within one championship of Roddy McKay's seven victories - the current record by any living Scot. (Champions Archive). Championships Preview
CLLR. TOMMY BROOKES, Stirling's Provost, hosts a civic reception at the Council Offices in Corn Exchange Road on Saturday 6th July for players starting their nine-days of chess at the 109th Scottish Chess Championships in the Wallace High School.
After the reception, Nicola McCabe, a 15-year-old from Balfron High School, in Highland regalia will lead the players to the skirl of the pipes to the Albert Halls. Maybe our many foreign friends will think it is all a wicked plot, like in bygone days, to put the frighteners on them before they take on the Scottish players.
During the week a series of visits and events have been organised. On Friday morning there's a football match, Scotland versus The World. Chess players from Nigeria, England, Ireland, Paul Motwani, a Grandmaster from Brussels, to name but a few will play against the Scots - maybe we're starting another Battle of Bannockburn!
Custodians of Stirling Castle, the Bannockburn Centre, the Wallace Monument and the Old Town Jail, have each kindly provided 10 complimentary tickets for visits.
And for the hardy, Dave Hewitt, an inveterate hill climber and free-lance writer on outdoor sports, will lead a party to the top of 1,472 ft high Dumyat. Being on a Sunday morning maybe, if they've got any breath left, some may utter a prayer as they savour the spectacular sights from the summit.
And as an opener, in the afternoon of Friday 5th, outdoor chess will be played on the piazza of the Albert Halls - some will think we're mad, or good weather forecasters! Do come and see our "pied piper", Nicola McCabe, on Saturday 6th at about 12.15 outside the Council Offices, Corn Exchange Road, Stirling. And look in (no charge) any afternoon at the chess games in the Wallace High School
