Scottish Championships 2006

Jonathan Grant of Edinburgh West has won the 2006 Scottish Championship. Jonathan scored 7.5/9 in the Walker Halls, Troon to finish 1.5 points clear of Andrew Muir (Hamilton) and Alan Grant (Cathcart). Keti Grant won the Scottish title in 2003 which could make this double triumph a world husband and wife chess first.

• The Under 1800 Championship, and
• The Under 1500 Championship.

Scottish Boys and Girls Championships

Chess Scotland announces that the Scottish Boys and Girls Championships will be held as part of this year's Scottish Congress.  Apologies for the short notice.  In addition to the two main trophies, further junior prizes will be available.  Details are: The Scottish Boys' Champion will be the highest placed boy in the most important event (Championship, Open, Under 1800, Under 1500 in that order). The Scottish Girls' Champion will be the highest placed girl. In both cases, this will be dependant on the Boy/Girl concerned scoring at least 20% in the event.

The highest placed Boy/Girl (subject to grading of under 2100) in the Open will be declared the Scottish Under 2100 Boys'/Girls' Champion and likewise for the Under 1800 and Under 1500 tournaments. Again, this will be subject to them scoring at least 20% in the event.

Byes will be counted in determining scores.

Best game prize donated by Lord Kirkwood

Thanks to the generosity of Chess Scotland Patron member Lord Kirkwood, we are delighted to announce that there will be a Best Game prize in the Scottish Congress this year.    The prizes, which are open to all players in all competitions, are:

Best Game Prize - £150
Best Swindle - £50
Giant Killer Prize - £50

The winner of the first two prizes will be decided by a panel of players. The Giant Killer Prize is awarded for a win against a higher rated player. The person with the highest rating difference wins.
