The winner, William Gibson, a member of Glasgow Chess Club, had previously won the title in 1907 and 1912. He would go on to win a total of nine times, a record only beaten by Aitken (10) and Fairhurst (11).
The annual meeting of the Association was held on the Wednesday afternoon, Mr RE Corrie, Dundee, presiding. It was decided that next year's congress should be held at Glasgow, and Mr JRK Law, Glasgow, was elected president. It was agreed to recommend that the British Chess Association should present their school shield and medal to Fettes College, Edinburgh. A resolution was unanimously carried that the Association considers that the Scottish champion should be entitled to compete for the British championship.
The Scotsman, Thursday, January 1, 1914
The Falkirk Herald of 31 December 1913, p4, listing
the participants, said:-
'Four of the players are from
Glasgow', which included J. "Black", who was described as a former
champion. The likely Candidate is
James Borthwick. It is doubtful that J. Crum or JD Chambers would use
an alias, and James Marshall was
still in Japan.
