Scottish Championship 1928
The 41st annual Congress of the Scottish Chess Association opened on
Friday, 30 December 1927 at the Edinburgh Chess Club, 1 Alva Street.
The tournament was somewhat marred by a non-appearance and two
retirals. Miss F. Hutchison Stirling intended to compete in the main
championship, but withdrew. Her place was taken by Mrs Ritchie, but soon
after the tournament started she and Serjeant retired, leaving only
eight players.

Dr Macdonald captured his sixth championship title, having previously
won in 1901, 1904-6 and 1927. He had also been runner-up in 1925 and
1926, being beaten by McKee in the latter event's play-off match.
McKee and James Gilchrist were Dr Macdonald's main rivals, former
champions Mackenzie and Page being out of their best form.
Scottish Ladies' Championship
There were only two
entries; Mrs Brockett of Glasgow, the holder, and Miss Malcolm of
Edinburgh. A short match was played, won by Miss Malcolm.
