British Championship 1937
Held at the Imperial Hotel, Blackpool, July 5-17
Fairhurst was born in England, but was based in Glasgow from 1931 and represented Scotland in the 1933 Olympiad at Folkestone.

Missing from the contest was William Winter, a fact that was, according to CHESS, 14 July 1937, p. 389, 'a withdrawal hardly unexpected after the unpleasant news in the newspapers of his instituting legal proceedings against a relative followed by his temporary loss of memory and sojourn in a London hospital.
The return to champiuonship competition of H.E. Atkins was greatly welcomed. Atkins, who had won the British championship seven years in succession from 1905-1911, and in 1924 and 1925, was now retired from his position of headmaster at a Huddersfield school, allowing him more time for such events.
