Scottish Championship 1954

The 61st Congress of the Scottish Chess Association opened on July 16 at the Masonic Hall, The Craigs, Stirling.

There was a busy playing schedule of play over the six days of the event. A four-hour session began at 9am, with a second session commencing at 5pm. Adjourned games were played off in the afternoons.

P.B. Anderson (Glasgow), for many years one of the leading players in Scotland, gained the trophy, first prize, and the special Spens memorial prize. This was his second championship, having previously taken the title in 1950.

The second prize was won by N.A. Perkins (London, formerly of Edinburgh), the third and fourth prizes were shared by E. Knopfler (Glasgow) and A. Lerchs (Aberdeen).

NOTE: Bruce Hayden was born in Scotland but later made his home in England . He was a chess columnist for the Sunday Times and other publications. He was also the author of ‘Cabbage Heads and Chess Kings', Arco Publications, 1960.
