East of Scotland v West of Scotland 1925

Saturday, 28 November, 1925

Albyn Rooms, Edinburgh

The proceedings were officially opened at 3:45 p.m. by Mr W.Tait Watson, K.C., a former president of the Scottish Chess Association. The East captain lost the toss, so the West players had the white pieces on the odd-numbered boards. There were 93 players on each team.

Play stopped at 8 p.m. with the West leading by several games, and only requiring a point or two from several adjudicated games for victory.

The players on boards 9, Mr JG Thomson and Mr J. Young, met each other by special request, to allow them to reminisce about earlier times. They had both played in the 1881 match in this series, 44 years past.

The East were missing several strong players. D. Simpson was ill, and CB Heath and H. Jackson had moved to London.

Sixteen ladies participated - seven for the East and nine for the West. Two of the East ladies won their games; Miss Florence Hutchison Stirling, who had won the Scottish Ladies Championship five times, had a good win against A. Murray on board 6, and Mrs Coast won on board 27. Five of the West ladies won their games, on boards 36, 54, 82, 89 and 92.

On the first 30 boards the West scored 18½ to 11½; on the second 30 the scores were even, 15 each, and on the final 33 boards the West scored 17½ to 15½. Final score: 51-42 for the West.
