The popular American, Frank Marshall, had previously visited Glasgow in 1903, when he completed a month's engagement at the Glasgow Chess Club. This time it was a much shorter visit of two days at the same club.
On the afternoon of Monday, 31 October, Marshall played several club members who played in consultation. In the evening he gave a simultaneous display against 16 opponents, winning 15 and drawing 1 with J. Borthwick.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, 1 November he lost a consultation game
against Dr Forrester and Allies, and scored a win and a loss against William Gibson. In the evening, he played another simultaneous display against 21 opponents, including three ex-Scottish champions. Marshall won 14, drew 5
(T. Sunter, J.A. McKee, H.N.J. Walsworth, A. Murray and Rev. Stuart Robertson), and lost 2 (W. Gibson and Dr Forrester).
This photo of Marshall was extraced from a
group shot of the participants at the British
Empire Club Masters' Tournament, held in London
shortly before Marshall's visit to Glasgow.
