Smyslov
From the High School of Glasgow Bulletin No. 130, January 30th 1969
As part of the fund-raising campaign [for the Scottish Junior International Tournament - AMcG], Smyslov and Gligorić were invited to play on 12th and 14th January respectively at Glasgow University Union. Smyslov played 27, won 18, drew 8, and lost 1.
Gligorić played 25, won 17, drew 8 and lost none.
Details of the Smyslov display were:
B. Allan 0; AP Borwell 0; M. Brodie ½; A. Scrimgour ½; C. Malcolm 1; S. Mannion ½; Mary McGinn ½; P. Giulian 0; SC Hamilton 0; CR Beecham 0; D. Findlay o; A. Dawson o; P. Geddes 0; NH Wilson 0; IF Brown ½; D. Bentley 0; J MacNeill 0; A. Sinclair 0; J. McNaught 0; MD Thornton ½.
This was a good result for the Scottish players, and many of those who lost
held out with good games for over 40 moves. To take an example, Alan
Borwell had a winning game until the need for speedy replies caused him to blunder.
