Alexander Kirkland Cairncross
11 February 1911 - 21 October 1998
It appears that Sir Alexander Kirkland
Cairncross, KCMG FBA FRSE, the noted economist and brother of the spy
John Cairncross had an interest in chess problems.
The Glasgow Herald featured a long
report about chess in its Saturday, 24 September 1921
edition. With the October 1 issue there began a regular column of
chess news, which also featured Problem Nr. 1. As time passed, regular
readers of the column were invited to submit solutions to the problems
and so began the tradition of the problem-solving competition.
The column of 19 June 1926 (p4) notes that one
of the earlier problems had been solved by A.K. Cairncross (jr.). His
name also appears in other columns that year, including June 26, July
3, 10, 17, 24 and 31, August 14 and 21, September 4 and 11, and
October 2.
NOTE
A.K. Cairncross is not
related to the
James Cairncross.
