John Connor

ca 1844, Ireland - 1920, Glasgow

Associated with the Glasgow and Bohemian Chess Clubs.

Mr Connor was a schoolteacher and, later, Headmaster of Garelochhead School, a role he served in from 1874-1910. On his retirement, the local residents presented him with a purse of sovereigns as a token of their appreciation.

After his retiral, he moved to Glasgow, where he could become even more active in club events. He had for many years been a strong supporter of the Scottish Chess Association, regularly taking part in the Minor competition, and he had also participated in events at the Glasgow CC - whose Minor tournament he won in 1901 - and the Bohemian CC

He died suddenly at 76 Armadale Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow on 8 January 1920.

The AGM of the Bohemian CC on 6 October 1920 recorded that for many years Mr Connor had regularly provided prizes for club competitions, and that he was the honorary President of the club at the time of his death.
