John Connor
ca 1844, Ireland - 1920, Glasgow
Associated with the Glasgow and Bohemian Chess
Clubs.
Mr Connor was a schoolteacher and, later,
Headmaster of Garelochhead School, a role he served in from 1874-1910.
On his retirement, the local residents presented him with a purse of
sovereigns as a token of their appreciation.
After his retiral, he moved to Glasgow, where
he could become even more active in club events. He had for many years
been a strong supporter of the Scottish Chess Association, regularly
taking part in the Minor competition, and he had also participated in
events at the Glasgow CC - whose Minor tournament he won in 1901 - and
the Bohemian CC
He died suddenly at 76 Armadale Street,
Dennistoun, Glasgow on 8 January 1920.
The AGM of the Bohemian CC on 6 October 1920
recorded that for many years Mr Connor had regularly provided prizes
for club competitions, and that he was the honorary President of the
club at the time of his death.
