British Chess Magazine 1934, p 488: On November 7 there passed away one who was probably the oldest chessplayer in Scotland, certainly the oldest in official circles; Dr Johnstone Macfie, of Inverkip, Renfrewshire, in his 86th year. He had been a member of the Glasgow CC since 1878, being for many years past hion. president, and was an original member of the Scottish Chess Association. He was a player who delighted in complicated and combinative chess, and always, very rightly, insisted on the rigour of the game, but was at the same time a most pleasant and chivalrous opponent. Increasing deafness, becoming at last total, compelled him to retire from play, but the remembrance of him endures as not only a player but also a generous patron and supporter of chess.
