The university's archives have no record of Maung
Maung completing his studies.
In 1917 he married Angelina Moscardini
(1898-1972) in Glasgow. They had two children; Edwin (1917-1985) and
Angeline (1919-2007).
Mr Maung played in the 'Major' at the 1920
Scottish Chess Association Congress in Edinburgh.
He also participated in the 1920 British Chess
Federation Congress in Edinburgh. In the Second-Class tournament he
scored 8½/11, finishing only a half-point behind the joint winners
Penberthy and A.R.B. Thomas.
The Falkirk Herald chess column
of 13 October 1920 mentions his winning a Lightning Tournament at the
Central CC, Glasgow. The report said he was a member of Glasgow CC,
but this may have been an editorial error; the Falkirk Herlald
chess column of 19 January 1921 shows him as a Bohemian CC
team member.
From the Falkirk Herald, 28 January
1921:
An interesting function took place on
Tuesday evening last week [18 January] at the Eldon Cafe, Glasgow,
when Mr A. Maung Maung, a Burmese gentleman who has been resident in
Glasgow for some years, was entertained on the eve of his return to
Burmah [sic]. Ex-Bailie Shaw Maxwell, president of the Glasgow
Bohemians Chess Club, presided at the gathering, which included
representatives of the principal Glasgow clubs. On presenting Mr Maung
with a gold albert and pendant, Bailie Shaw Maxwell, on behalf of
Glasgow chess players, wished him bon voyage, and conveyed their best
wishes for a prosperous career in his native country. Mr Maung
suitably replied.
Further information about Maung Maung would be
welcomed.
