Member of Bon Accord CC in Aberdeen. The 1950 Scottish Chess Association Year-Book shows his address as 367 Hilton Drive, Aberdeen.
Played in the 1946 and 1947 Scottish Boys' Championships. In 1946 he tied for 1st with U. Jackson, but lost the play-off match. In 1947 he won outright 1st place. Took part in the British Boys' Championship of 1948 (as did John A. Jackson of Glasgow).
In the BCM for May 1948, p 149 Middleton is shown as 17 years of age, and attending Central Secondary School, Aberdeen (now named Hazlehead Academy).
Played in the Scottish Championships of 1949 and 1955, both held in Aberdeen. Was a member of the Scottish team against England in 1955, drawing his game with Honan. Was also a member of the Scottish team at the 1956 Olympiad in Moscow. As 1st Reserve, he scored 1 win, 8 draws and 4 losses.
