Helen Milligan was educated at Dunino Primary School
and Madras College, St Andrews, followed by the University of St
Andrews, where she obtained her PhD in 1989.
She played for Madras College frequently, and also
represented St Andrews in the the Tayside and Fife Chess Association
League. When she lived in London she was a member of the Athenaeum CC
and played for them in the 4NCL.
She showed that she had a promising future when in her
teens and it wasn't long before she achieved early success with her
first Scottish Women's win in 1982, followed by a share of the British
Women's title in 1983.
In 2007 she moved to New Zealand and represented that
country thereafter. At the time of writing (February 2022) she is
President of the North Shore CC, Auckland.
Achievements
Scottish Women's Champion 1982, 1986 and 1988 (both
shared).
British Women's Champion 1983 (shared).
Eleven Olympiad appearances for Scotland 1982─2006.
Six Olympiad appearances for New Zealand 2008─2018.
Five-time Asian Senior Women's Champion; 2014 in
Waskaduwa, Sri Lanka; 2015 in Larestan, Iran; 2016 in Mandalay,
Myanmar; 2017 in Auckland, New Zealand; 2018 in Tagaytay,
Philippines.
First place (shared) in the 2015 New Zealand Major
Open.
FIDE Candidate Master (CM) and Woman FIDE Master (WFM).
International Arbiter and FIDE Instructor.
Co-authored, with GM Murray Chandler, Chess for
Children (2004).
Oceania women's champion at the Queenstown Chess
Classic tournament, January 2012.
Competed in the Women's Zonals in Bath 1987, Blackpool
1990, Delden 1993, Saint Vincent 1999, and Warsaw 2001. She also
played in the Open Zonal in Gold Coast 2009.
Dr Milligan considers her most outstanding prize to be
her 3rd-place 'Best Game' prize in the Rapid of the 1992 Women's World
Rapid and Blitz Championship (Budapest) for the game
Benschop-Milligan.
