Andrew Reid of Auchterarder and Glasgow was a member of
the Glasgow Chess Club since 1894. He 'gave generous financial support
when needed by the club', including a £100 legacy. He was also a
life-member of the Scottish Chess Association, as well as a patron and
past president.
He was also an early member of the Arlington Baths in
Arlington Street, Glasgow, which developed a chess club in 1880 from
its members.
Mr Reid was a Deputy Lieutenant of Perthshire and
Glasgow City County.
Andrew Reid was the son of James Reid of Neilson Reid
& Co., who were one of the pioneers of the locomotive building
industry in the West of Scotland. Later, the company amalgamated with
others to form the North British Locomotive Company, of which Andrew
Reid was the Chief Managing Director at the time of his death.
