The Falkirk Herald chess column of 17 July 1940 stated that Mr Thomson was aged 70 at the time of his death, and had been a member of Glasgow CC and Burns CC (Glasgow). The GlasgowHerald chess column of 13 July 1940 added that Mr Thomson had been a member of the West of Scotland team that won the British Districts Correspondence Chess Championship in 1924, and that he was known in golfing and musical circles.
