Glasgow 1970

Junior International Invitation Tournament

The ninth Glasgow Congress, held in September, broke the Scottish record for the number of contestants at a chess event, with 297 players in ten different tournaments.

An innovation that year was the Junior International Invitation event, held in conjunction with the Scottish Junior Chess Association. Participants included nine players who had represented their countries in the 1970 Glorney Cup, held just a few months earlier at Bearsden, near Glasgow: Bailey, Bellin and Saverymuttu (England); Findlay, Holt, Rosenberg and Sinclair (Scotland); D. James (Wales) and O'Hare (Ireland). Added to that list were John Nunn (England), and Rajinder (Raj) Bhopal and Allan Radlow (Scotland).

Note: Scottish Chess No. 30, in referring to this Junior International event, stated that the Irish representative had played in the 1970 Glorney Cup, giving the player's name as R. O'Hare. The 1970 Glorney Cup tournament booklet gave T. O'Hare as being a member of the Irish team. I have stayed with R. O'Hare, as Iain Sinclair has noted that on his score sheet.
