Erwin Knopfler
October 2008: Chess Scotland historian Alan McGowan has tracked down photographs of Erwin Knopfler, a Scottish Championship player of the 1950s who was father of Knopfler brothers Mark and David of Dire Straits music fame. See original article which identified the Knopfler connection.
This shot first appeared on a Swedish site and Alan was sent a copy which is reproduced here with permission of David Knopfler.
Alan thinks it may be from 1953, when the Jewish Institute won the Glasgow League Div. 1 title. Does anyone recognise the trophies?
Erwin Knopfler is on the far right. Second from right could be A. Klibanskie-Miller (sometimes Klibanski and, I think, sometimes without the Miller). Or could it be Frank Slotopolsky? Both are familiar to Glasgow League players for trophies bearing their names.
Alan thinks the photo source is the Jewish Echo which he will check when next in Glasgow.
