Scottish Schools Team Championship
The Scotsman Trophy
The competition began in season 1967-68. The early winners
were:-
1968 Boroughmuir High School, Edinburgh 1969 Allan
Glen's School, Glasgow 1970 Boroughmuir High School, Edinburgh
Boroughmuir pupils, and teacher
Three of them were in the 1968 Glorney Cup team: RD Waugh; CC
Campbell, and EJ Holt
By the time of the fourth championship, The Scotsman
newspaper in Edinburgh had stepped forward and donated the Scotsman
Trophy for the event.
The trophy was to be held by the winning team for a year,
with each member of both teams in the final to receive a miniature of the
trophy. The members of the winning team also received a gift voucher.
The first winner of the trophy was Ayr Academy; 50
schools competed, compared to 36 the year before. John Glendinning, the
then president of the Scottish Junior Chess Association, predicted a
higher entry in the years following as some 62 schools were now affiliated
to the association.
