Artur Yusupov
Excerpt from (amended): Scottish Chess, Issue 207, December 2006.
A major coup for the Scottish chess scene saw former world number three and World Championship Candidate GM Artur Yusupov visit Scotland in October, giving a series of lectures and a simultaneous exhibition.
Over four sessions in Glasgow Yusupov discussed the topic of technique in great depth, outlining the most important principles of winning a 'won' position; reducing counterplay, creating a second weakness, not rushing, exchanging the correct pieces. Yusupov's humorous and enthusiastic style was highly educational and entertaining.
Following this, Yusupov spent some time training with the Scottish Olympiad Squad, before giving a simul at Glasgow Montrose Chess Club. He was defeated once, by Mike Dyer of Bearsden Chess Club.
Credit must go to IM Jacob Aagaard for organising the visit.
