I was surprised to see that there is a GM playing in the Open event, he has a
grading 400 above his nearest rivals so i suspect he might just win the tournament.

In view of various recent posts. I am inviting constructive comments on this thread as to where this forum in general should be going e.g. should it be chess Scotland members only or to what level of discussion should be allowed. Should the forum be used to generate proposals for meetings and/or what can of information should be displayed

  Glenrothes 1988 Lightning
Posted by: Alex Gillies - 30-07-2015, 09:51 AM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (1)

http://www.chessscotland.com/history/glenrothes1988.htm

There are some gems hidden in the Historical Archives, would recommend a general nosey.

This one has loads of interesting points: Never mind Tal or Spassky what about the very tough Qualifier, Bryson's Pyjamas and Giulian beating Spassky. First place a not to shabby either at £3,000. Only negative seems to have been the poor show of spectators for some reason but otherwise looked like a great event.

The Greatest Game of Bullet Chess Ever??

Well that is what it's being called by one lad who did a 23 minute YouTube thing on it.

(plus a chess mystery featuring a new Chess Detective and a good Knight study)

can the following be clarified; by saying members only on this part of CS Noticeboard, does that mean one has to be a member of CS? Apologies if this was discussed before, poor memory.

  New Season 2016
Posted by: Douglas Bryson - 28-07-2015, 03:12 PM - Forum: Ask the Grader - Replies (2)

The new season 2015-16 has been uploaded today - July 28, 2015.

There are a few problems in relation to the display of previous seasons and this season's ranking lists which need to be fixed.

Will update here when we think system is working correctly.

Games from Scottish 2015
I've tidied up the .PGNs (corrections to names, added in grades, all to Chessbase format etc) and compiled into one file - 425 games in total.
Our thanks to Andy, Alex & the team for the work inputting them all!

  AGM proposals
Posted by: amuir - 27-07-2015, 12:23 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (117)

These are my proposals.
Any that are seconded will be sent to Andy H for formality.I shall attend in person.

1. The Scottish Champion must be SCO FIDE affiliated.
2. Having a Scottish grandparent is insufficient eligibility to represent Scotland. This shall not appear in any eligibility rules.
3. Matt Turner will be considered for the Olympiad as a wildcard due to services to chess, subject to agreement of the reamining team members.
4. There shall be no selection oversight position. International Directors shall be solely responsible for selections.
5. Directors shall serve a one-year term. (As in football, bad managers should be sacked promptly)
6. The Scottish Championships shall not overlap the Glorney Cup dates (our top players rarely play in the Glorney and haven't won for 50 years)
7. Our top juniors, having received training, are expected to play in the Glorney Cup each year.

  Largs Viking Chess Congress
Posted by: Gary McPheator - 26-07-2015, 08:35 PM - Forum: Chess Scotland Forum - Replies (15)

The Largs Viking Chess Congress is taking place from the 4th to the 6th of September at the Sportscotland National Centre Inverclyde, Largs. Full details of the congress are available at the Chess Scotland website.

I would like to draw attention to a change in how the Grading Prizes will operate this year. Unlike in our previous two congresses, 90% of the field will be eligible for a Grading Prize e.g in a 40 player section, only the 4 highest graded players entered will not be eligible to win a Grading Prize at the start of the event.

As well as offering this increased opportunity for winning a prize, I would also like to point out that the more entries we have, the prize fund will increase. We have based the advertised prizes on 80 players participating, and if we attract the 120 players the recent Ayr congress managed, this would result in a doubling of the prize fund.

On behalf of everybody involved in organizing the congress, we look forward to welcoming you to Largs!
