I have some sad news to pass on that George Anderson passed away peacefully at home last week.
George was a long standing member of the Edinburgh Civil Service Club serving as treasurer and secretary for many years.
George's skills were put to good use in his multiple roles as membership secretary for Chess Scotland, entries organiser for Edinburgh Congresses and supporting the Chess Edinburgh Council.
George had his playing successes winning the club championship on three occasions. He was also a regular supporter of local chess tournaments, as well as taking part in Scottish Championship subsidiary tournaments.
George was a skilled woodworker and every year made small trophies using chess pieces from older wooden sets and hand making the plinths from salvaged / donated pieces of wood. George must have made more than fifty of the smaller trophies over the years. A treasured keepsake for those lucky enough to win one. In 2019 George made the Balerno Trophy for Chess Edinburgh which is awarded annually to the junior with the highest grading improvement for the season.
Although not able to attend the club in person and just short of 90 years old, George was still playing online games against club members until very recently.
George will be sadly missed.
The funeral will be at 1pm on Friday 17th March at Mortonhall Crematorium.

Chess Scotland National Arbiter (NA) Course
The first step to become an arbiter is to gain the National Arbiter title. This award is recognised by Chess Scotland and the world governing body, FIDE.
There are two aspects to gaining this title, practical experience and theoretical knowledge.
Practical experience is gained by assisting at chess events (excluding tournaments which are restricted to a local club).
Chess Scotland will be holding a series of Lectures to enable Chess Scotland members to achieve the theoretical knowledge to become NAs.
The practical and theoretical parts can be taken in any order, though it is suggested that candidates should be aware of the practical aspects before doing the theory.

Edinburgh Park Blitz and Congress |

Coming up this weekend on Friday a Blitz which you have now missed as the entries are closed., followed by a 2 day congress on the Saturday and Sunday with 11 places left just now.
Late fee of £5 will apply from Wednesday so enter before then to save some cash, if you can.
If you enter and then find you cannot make it for any reason we would appreciate being told before the first round so that we do not have the spectacle of people sitting at boards waiting for an opponent who has no intention of being there or telling anyone they won't be there anyway.
We do take note of people who do this and intend to not allow them entry without good reason in the future.

4th and 5th of February for our next 2 allegros with the Edinburgh Park one having 9 places left.
Our new venue in Renfrew, Glynhill Hotel, has 29 spaces left.
Again the event in the west of the country not attracting the level of entries required really, maybe time to stop doing them there unless entries start improving.

If you haven't already seen my message about SNCL in general chess chat here it is. Then scroll down to see the teams that have confirmed. If you are not one of them email me ASAP.
Hi Folks,
I am delighted to say SNCL is back!!
The dates are on the front page of Chess Scotland.
At the end of the last season it was too tight to call who would be winners or losers so we are going to keep all teams in the divisions they were in during 2019/20 All teams need to email me that they are coming by the 15th January and any new teams will go into the lowest division. The entry fee is £50 per team for this season only as a welcome back. We intend to start again in October 2023 for the traditional season unless the AGM decides they like the new date format.
For multiple teams I am also suspending the rule that higher graded players need to play in the top team, owing to grades not being accurate following Covid lockdowns and lack of competitions. However, the rule remains that players within their assigned team will then play in grading order with a 100 point flexibility.
Please pay on the first day, preferably cash.
Look forward to seeing all teams back on the 29th January 2023 for rounds 1 and 2.
Glynis

Teams registered are CSBOS x2, Perth A, Edin West, Dundee x4, Stepps, Lenzie x3, Troon (New team Div 5), Corstorphine, Bon Accord
