  Scottish Junior Championship
Posted by: PeterReidSmith - 12-04-2014, 09:24 AM - Forum: Why don't you? - Replies (1)

HI,

The girls and boys events were all good (SC and SJC) and SJC even did some age ones this year - again, all good.

That said, how about a Scottish "Junior" weekend even that simply combines the whole girl, boy and age championships - to be honest (simply compare) we get some asymmetry, so a joined up event would very possibly work better. Girl/Boy prizes can be awarded per section/age group as well as overall winner. You could do the same for Allegro (1 day event). That would then give us a very clear picture across age groups, a joined up girl/boy competition and wider scope for the girls across all the age groups - very likely attract more. Less logistical difficulties too.

Worth a though - I've already chatted with David on it and in principle he can see the idea. Worth a forum review though maybe to see if others feel the same way.

  ChessBase question
Posted by: andyburnett - 07-04-2014, 02:55 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (6)

A technical question if I may.....

I am trying to 'output' my ChessBase games into a 'text' version. I need the annotations/text to be automatically bracketed thus {blahblahblah} in order for the annotations to show up in the correct format for pgn4web. Does anyone know how to do this? The developer of pgn4web told me that ChessBase should do it automatically, but it doesn't seem to Sad I could re-bracket every phrase or word individually, but life is too short!

An example to illustrate: this is what I get from the CB output -

26...exd6?? 27.Re1! and now I got that horrible sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach 27...Rc8 28.Rec1 Rc5 29.Rb2 Bf5 30.Rxc5?! Now I began to have hope again, but hope is a dangerous virtue in chess; it can rise higher than the position allows for. 30.Rc4 was better]

This is what I need it to do automatically -

26...exd6?? 27.Re1! {and now I got that horrible sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.} 27...Rc8 28.Rec1 Rc5 29.Rb2 Bf5 30.Rxc5?! {Now I began to have hope again, but hope is a dangerous virtue in chess; it can rise higher than the position allows for.} 30.Rc4 {was better}]

Just noticed that the top seed in the Edinburgh Knights section is a boy from England aged seven. I understand there may not be live boards but would be good to see some of his games.

In the third round yesterday, Scotland 1 drew 2-2 with Austria Vienna 2 with Ian Robertson winning and Peter Jamieson losing with the other two games drawn. Scotland 2 lost by 1-3 to Austria - Neiderosterrich, with Alastair White drawing on board 1 and my opponent drawing by perpetual check after I missed best winning sacrifice in time scramble both against higher rated players with Douglas McKerracher and Ian Marks losing.

  Recommendation for club website hosting
Posted by: Jonathan Livingstone - 04-04-2014, 10:27 AM - Forum: Non-Chess Related - Replies (9)

Long story short, our club site is homeless after our free webhost removed our website without any notice and stated it can only be restored if a paid for account is purchased. Bit of a ransom demand really, and a little bit scammish!

You get what you pay for I guess, so we need to purchase a decent but nothing fancy hosting space, and a domain name also. This is new territory for me as the webmaster of our club site.

I am clearly not a good judge of whats a good webhost. Can someone more knowledgable please give me a recommendation?
