  Paul MacDonald
Posted by: David Deary - 15-07-2020, 11:13 PM - Forum: Obituaries - Replies (7)

Dear All,

I got some tragic news tonight from one of Paul's friends, Paul passed away earlier tonight at 7:30pm in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
I will update on funeral arrangements as I get them. As I understand it is likely to be a cremation with his ashes going down to Liverpool where his family are.

I would appreciate it if you could share the news amongst fellow chess players as he was a popular guy within chess in Scotland.

I'm still a bit emotional so will post my memories of him here at a later date.

Best wishes,

David

  Getting back to normal
Posted by: George Neave - 04-07-2020, 08:36 AM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (21)

COVID infection levels in Scotland are heading towards zero, businesses are reopening, flights are flying and schools will return to the classroom in August. As this happens in the wider community, I wonder how CS plans to get back to normal? For example, will we finish the 2019/20 Richardson Cup and SNCL events in the Autumn and are event organisers hoping to run 2020/21 events following the traditional calendar?

On a related matter - I notice Dundee Congress in October has been cancelled. Personally, I was disappointed to see that and was wondering the rational there - still too much uncertainty to allow time for planning maybe?

  CS Mag - April 2020
Posted by: George Neave - 20-06-2020, 12:54 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - No Replies

Finally had a browse through this today. What a treat to read over David Levy's games in his first international event since the 1978 Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires. Looking over these, I don't believe a word of his claims to have dropped in playing strength and who says over 65's are just looking for a quiet life? This is aggressive stuff and model games that our juniors should be studying carefully (instead of the London system  Smile ). Absolutely brilliant. I hope there will more of this to come when we all get let out again!

  Jim MacRae
Posted by: Ianbrownlee - 17-06-2020, 01:55 PM - Forum: Obituaries - Replies (6)

Another of our old friends and clubmates Jim MacRae has passed away on May 25 at the age of 84.

Jim was a long time member of Crowwood and Stepps and most of you will remember him with affection as I do. He was an enthusiastic and formidable chess player and travelled all over the UK to play in congresses and seniors events. He played to quite a high level and only stopped playing for Stepps a few years ago. I nearly persuaded him to resume last season but he continued playing congresses until recently.
Jim was well liked and respected throughout Scottish chess circles and will be sadly missed. (Message by Drew Pollock, Secretary Stepps CC)

Hi Guys
The next step for us super admins is to create a Scottish Regional online League on chess.com

1. I have created a Scottish Regional online super-admin club for us all to support and create the above League. The super-admins and admins I have been working with know this already. For this who dont and with to participate please click on the link below.

https://www.chess.com/club/scottish-regi...oin/5841de

As each admin as accepted I will make them a super-admin of this club. For those who wish to join but dont know me i would appreciate an email or PM to let me know who they are. We have also had an interest from beyond the border as well so we may go international in the longer term.
Any queries or questions please contact me by email ian.brownlee@systemsit.co.uk or pm me

Ian
