Scottish 2017 - Alan Tate - 30-12-2016

The dates are in the calendar as 15-23 July. Can anyone say if these dates are confirmed?

Re: Scottish 2017 - Alex McFarlane - 30-12-2016

They are.

Re: Scottish 2017 - Alan Tate - 07-02-2017

Is there a reason why it's a week later than normal?

Re: Scottish 2017 - amuir - 07-02-2017

Has provision been made to look after the Glorney Cup squad ?
e.g. half -point byes available for anyone that wants it in rounds 8 & 9
The entry form is unhelpful :
"Players wishing a ½ point bye must request it on the entry form. In the
unlikely event of a player asking for a bye after round 2 then it will not count
towards any Championship title."
Why not ?
There is an overlap - we don't want squad weakened by playing in the Scottish instead. This means juniors + coaches.

The Welsh Chess Union are delighted to host the Glorney Gilbert International 2017.
Provisional Dates are: Arrival - 23 July, Departure- 27 July 2017 at Park Inn Cardiff North, Circle Way, Cardiff.

Venue not available earlier, or at least not for the duration of the event.

.

Why should it? If people want to play in the UK Challenge (which is the normal clash) then they have to decide on their priorities. I am happy to review the situation for anyone representing their country, though the chances are that all the major contenders will be in the same position.
This rule was decided after some consultation and has been in place since 2007.

The Glorney/Faber dates are/were provisional. It is hard enough to avoid clashes when dates are set. I've been caught out in the past by avoiding a provisional date for it to be confirmed at a different date which did clash anyway.

Re: Scottish 2017 - Alan Tate - 08-02-2017

I see. That's an acceptable reason, even if the outcome is unfortunate.

Re: Scottish 2017 - amuir - 08-02-2017

We need a strong player as Glorney coach e.g. GM Matt Turner who has done this before.
Therefore half-point byes should be offered in all rounds of the Scottish for any player - otherwise this is a disincentive to Glorney success.
In 1977 we had Bill Russell as coach , much weaker in strength than the whole team , a contributing factor in our failure.
