European Youth - Hugh Brechin - 08-08-2012
The European Youth Chess Championships kicks off next Friday in Prague. Scotland are taking the following squad.
Under 10 Boys: Vagif Ramazanov, Liam Richmond
Under 12 Boys: Murad Abdulla, Kai Pannwitz
Under 12 Girls: Anna Milton
Under 14 Boys: Alexander Bond
Under 16 Boys: Nihad Abdullazada, Ian McDonald, Carl Milton
Under 16 Girls: Alice Lampard
Under 18 Boys: Andrew McClement, Hamish Olson
Under 18 Girls: Ali Roy
Coach: Alan Tate

There will be some live coverage of games, though I don't yet know the extent. I'm hopeful that I will be able to keep people inform of results and how everything's progressing via this thread.

This is terrible news. I'm already having to consider coming in to work at the weekends and now more work is going to build up because I will be forced to keep up to date with happenings in the EuroYouth.

Hugh,
I am sure I won't be alone in looking down our Scotland Euroyouth representatives and thinking to myself it is one of the best squads we have assembled. Everyone is there on merit and have achieved so much in their junior careers so far. I have total confidence in everyone and wish them the very best in representing us at this pinnacle event,

Perhaps the organisers of the Marymass tournament should advertise the fact that these juniors won't be there to take grading points, and prizes, from the adults ? =)

Best of luck to all involved. With a good mix of new and old heads and two strong players to coach I am sure that they can get some good results. Just remember that no matter the grade of your opponent, and no matter the position on the board your opponent will always make mistakes: just stay awake for them and have the confidence to take the chance.
Its a different venue I guess but the best food we had at any of the events we went to was in Turkey - unlike what the Italians served up. At the latter event I had to give the hotel management a verbal beating to obtain the vegetarian option one of our players had requested.

Mike, that's very much how I feel too. Guys like Ali, Ian, Andrew and Hamish are worth their weight in gold to Alan and Hugh. There is a nice blend of players with years of international experience plus guys like Kai, Murad and Anna that although are still young, have played at the top level on more than one occasion. The first time you enter the fray of an event of this level it can be daunting in the extreme (pretty nervewracking for heads of delegation too!) but exciting and challenging also. We feel we are building a useful squad and will be working hard to add to it in the future,
