The school perspective is tricky, but it's always going to be there - players/parents will just make a call at the time. Typically, they'll obviously not do all of them - which then provides opportunities to broaden out the selection and give others some experience. That can't be a bad thing surely.

In short, I don't feel we can allow assumptions about education-time-lost to constrain our support or interest in these events (as an organisation).

Especially when we also receive a fully funded place for a coach/head of delegation at the pinnacle events.

If and only if they have a FIDE trainer licence

The coach/head of delegation does not need a Fide trainers licence for events such as The EU Youth Championships (which Kai Pannwitz won) and Jugendschach at Mureck. A fully funded place is available. We still didn't send a squad.
For events such as the World Youth, World Cadets, Euroyouth and Under 16 Olympiad a fully funded place is available for a coach/head of delegation as long as they have a Fide trainer licence. ChessScotland has spent a not inconsiderable amount of money for folks (ten so far, I make it) to attain this qualification at various European based events. After all, if they have this title we receive the free fully funded accommodation place. If we are spending money in order to attain this accreditation, why aren't we using it at the events it's designed for?

Andy,

What exactly do you mean?

Robin, you seem keen on international rather than local tournaments.
Do you know where the £33k last year was spent ?
Was it on training, accommodation , travel , entry fees ?
Remember it is £0k this year - a big culture change

Andy M,

Writing to the finance director would be your best bet.
