Re: World Record for Roddy? - Andy Howie - 18-07-2013 "Child prodigy Sammy Reshevsky held the record of longest span between national titles of 33 years, winning his first US championship in 1936, and his last in 1969." Re: World Record for Roddy? - amuir - 18-07-2013 http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/set ... -breaking/ Someone should investigate, process is free , takes 6 weeks Re: World Record for Roddy? - P Griffin - 18-07-2013 So what happened to the Scottish Boys Championship? I note that some regulars on this forum were competing in the 70's Re: World Record for Roddy? - amuir - 18-07-2013 In the 70's fischer boom the scottish boys championship was very strong, held at the same time as the main champs - most top juniors played. As the boom wore off, less players played and became no longer feasible and now its the highest player in the main champs Re: World Record for Roddy? - Alan McGowan - 18-07-2013 I have sent some information to Edward Winter and he has posted the following in his Chess Notes on 18 July. http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/ 8141. National championship Alan McGowan (Waterloo, Canada) reports that in Helensburgh on 14 July 2013 Roddy McKay became Scottish champion for the eighth time, having first won the title (jointly) in 1971. Our correspondent asks whether this spread of 42 years in the same national championship has been matched or surpassed by any other players. Re: World Record for Roddy? - amuir - 20-07-2013 no mention of scot champs in rowson GH column today - Dougie's SOS column cancelled too Re: World Record for Roddy? - Alan McGowan - 21-07-2013 Here is a reply from Edward Winter's Chess Notes site at http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/ dated July 20, 2013. 8144. National championship (C.N. 8141) Michael McDowell (Westcliff-on-sea, England) comments that Howard Williams won the Welsh championship 43 years apart, in 1968 and 2011. Confirming this to us, Howard Williams (Cardigan, Wales) writes: ‘It is, though, fair to point out that in both 1968 and 2011 I tied for first place with somebody else. (There were no arrangements to split ties on either occasion, and the title was simply held jointly.)’ From C.N. 8141 it will be recalled that Roddy McKay’s first Scottish championship title, in 1971, was also a joint victory. |
