Re: NEW Baku Olympiad thread! - amuir - 13-09-2016 John Donaldson, the USA captain was talking how their young bottom 2 boards might get to the 2700 level by playing in Europe to give them a paid career. We finished below seeding for the 8th time in a row. Our young players on the list - Clement (no games), Joe (no games ), Calum (lost 22 points at the Scottish) have not progressed over the summer. It looks like they all have paid jobs away from chess. Re: NEW Baku Olympiad thread! - Alan Borwell - 13-09-2016 Well I thought both of our teams did pretty well and finished close to their seeding positions. The ladies were not at full strength and Ali Roy was unable to play in the last 2 rounds. Keti is to be praised for playing for the team and helping the three younger ladies who all had some excellent results. Maybe our Open team was also not at full strength and Colin missed the last two rounds but they did commendably considering the vagaries of the system where it seems that you meet either much stronger or much weaker teams alternatively and avoid playing many teams with similar rankings. For us spectators it was an excellent event with reliable live games! Re: NEW Baku Olympiad thread! - amuir - 15-09-2016 The USA would have won the Olympiad even if we had lost our last round to Lebanon. The tie-break was SB using game points*match points. The USA SB was 413.5 & Ukraine 404.5, a difference of 9. Their Scottish component was 3.5*12 = 42. A loss would mean 3.5*10 =35 reducing SB to 406.5 still winning. |
