A very competitive days chess and just the thing to get your brain back into gear after the holidays. Also nice to see there were so many live games. I wonder what kind of audience this got - anyone know? On a related point, I have a question, talking with one of the participating juniors I heard how he had stopped clock and had a time increment added during his final minute. I confess I had no idea you can do this and would be grateful if an arbiter could clarify how this works. Thanks Re: Lothians Allegro Saturday 10 January - Graham Kerr - 11-01-2015 George Neave Wrote:Thanks to all who put on this event yesterday. I wonder what kind of audience this got - anyone know? There shouldn't have been any time increments in the tournament and i can't say i noticed any on the clocks as i was watching, but then i was more concerned with taking pics than i was paying attention to the games. I think i know who it is you refer to George, i was talking with his father in a group, increments were mentioned at the same time as someone else spoke, so i didn't get the gist of what it was he was saying... Did he tell you it was in just one game or was it throughout the event? Re: Lothians Allegro Saturday 10 January - hamish olson - 11-01-2015 It's a new (2014) addition to the two minute rule - if someone feels they can draw a position but has too little time they are entitled to ask for a 5 second increment if they are under two minutes. The arbiter is allowed to refuse. It's designed for positions that aren't quite clear enough to get a draw claim in I think. Re: Lothians Allegro Saturday 10 January - Andy McCulloch - 11-01-2015 I think you will find that, when allowed, it replaces 10.2 draw claims. It is designed to give the player with a material advantage the time to play for a win. Re: Lothians Allegro Saturday 10 January - hamish olson - 11-01-2015 It doesn't replace the draw claims, it supplements them, and requesting the 5 second increment is tantamount to offering a draw so if your opponent is material up and asks for the 5 second increment then you would be advised to take the draw (assuming you didn't have sufficient compensation). I would like more information on what the different criteria are between the draw claim and the five second rule - when would you get the 5 second increment but not the draw etc.? Re: Lothians Allegro Saturday 10 January - Graham Kerr - 12-01-2015 I didn't know of this rule change... I can see that it would cause problems for arbiters, messing around with clocks to add the increment i don't think would be straightforward. I wonder if the latest clocks would come with some sort of preset function to simply switch to incremental times...
