Largs Viking Chess Congress - Gary McPheator - 26-07-2015 The Largs Viking Chess Congress is taking place from the 4th to the 6th of September at the Sportscotland National Centre Inverclyde, Largs. Full details of the congress are available at the Chess Scotland website. I would like to draw attention to a change in how the Grading Prizes will operate this year. Unlike in our previous two congresses, 90% of the field will be eligible for a Grading Prize e.g in a 40 player section, only the 4 highest graded players entered will not be eligible to win a Grading Prize at the start of the event. As well as offering this increased opportunity for winning a prize, I would also like to point out that the more entries we have, the prize fund will increase. We have based the advertised prizes on 80 players participating, and if we attract the 120 players the recent Ayr congress managed, this would result in a doubling of the prize fund. On behalf of everybody involved in organizing the congress, we look forward to welcoming you to Largs! Re: Largs Viking Chess Congress - Gary McPheator - 18-08-2015 The Largs Viking Chess Congress is pleased to announce that the Largs Viking Festival has once again kindly donated a Replica Lewis Chessmen Set, which will be awarded to the junior (16 and under) who performs the best over the weekend. As there are two sections, this will be decided by tournament performance rating, with the junior with the highest TPR winning our Best Junior Prize. In addition, this year we will also be offering a prize to the best junior (16 and under) in the section that does not provide the overall Best Junior Prize winner, an Isle of Lewis Compact Celtic Chess Set. The continued support by the Largs Viking Festival is very much appreciated! An update with regard to our accommodation offer. We have only one place left at Hillcrest Cottage, so anyone who is still looking for somewhere to stay over the weekend of the congress and is ok with sharing a twin room with another player, please get in touch asap before it is too late. Re: Largs Viking Chess Congress - Ianbrownlee - 08-09-2015 George I think you've watch one episode of Vikings too many Re: Largs Viking Chess Congress - Alan Jelfs - 08-09-2015 George Neave Wrote:Was there a round 5 or did the vikings arrive and everyone fled? There was indeed a 5th round, with the players under strict instructions from the hard-pressed arbiter that there was to be no repeat of the game drawn under the 50-move rule, like in the 4th round. From memory, Steve Mannion took first prize in the Open and Andrew Greet was second. The other prizes were decided under some unfathomable tie-break system. Lennart Koehn won 3rd prize, top junior and the 1st grading prize. (only one of these prizes was monetary) Rosie Giulian won the 2nd grading prize, and Craig Gillies the 3rd grading prize. Sorry, can't remember the prize winners in the Challengers.
