Gibraltar 2014 - andyburnett - 28-01-2014

This huge tournament starts today. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.gibraltarchesscongress.com/">http://www.gibraltarchesscongress.com/</a><!-- m -->

In the Masters section Neil Berry plays white against Ivan Cheparinov, rated 2697 (!) and long-time second of Veselin Topalov. Alan Tate (seeded 118th!) faces a 1561-rated Icelandic girl.

In the Challenger's section Scotland is represented by Raj Bhopal and Colin Hornell.

Good luck to all of them Smile Results can be followed here <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://chess-results.com/tnr120746.aspx?lan=1&art=0&fedb=SCO&fed=SCO&wi=821">http://chess-results.com/tnr120746.aspx ... SCO&wi=821</a><!-- m -->

Colin Hornell! There is a name from the past. One of the best players ever to come from Greenwood Academy. Anyone know where he is based now? Colin was part of an all conquering Greenwood team including Gary MacPeake. Think Crawford MacNab was around at that time too.

Looked up the ECF grading database for Colin.

Chukwuka Allor is also playing in the Challengers

Re: Gibraltar 2014 - Andy McCulloch - 28-01-2014

Seems to be two of him, he is down as playing Pia Cramling in the Masters. He also appears to have played two rounds in the Challenger A. Is that possible?

Yep, the Challengers is in the morning, the Masters in the afternoon, so occasionally those brave and energetic (or masochistic) souls play both events Smile

Re: Gibraltar 2014 - Alan Jelfs - 28-01-2014

Another erstwhile regular on the Scottish chess scene, Raymond Wynarczyk, is also taking part.

Re: Gibraltar 2014 - Alan Jelfs - 29-01-2014

I think it's worth noting that, despite about 250 entrants and huge rating differences they aren't using accelerated pairings.
