Whilst those performances were/are deserving of praise we are not comparing like with like. In those days it was only one player per country and you had the USSR instead of all the former Soviet countries that you now have. A 10th place finish then will not be far removed from a 50th place finish now.
To win then was certainly a great achievement but finishing 30th would have meant being near the bottom of the tournament.
