Ian Crorie

Sad news of chess-turned-bridge player Ian Crorie:

"We are sorry to report that Ian Crorie has passed away after suffering a heart attack

The arrangements for Ian's funeral are as follows. The service will be held at Morton Hall Crematorium at 2 pm on Thursday 15 September in the larger chapel. Those attending are also invited to Morton Hall Golf Club on 231 Braid Rd, Edinburgh EH10 6PB, for some refreshments after the service.

Those who knew Ian will remember him as a charming man and a very fine bridge player of international stature.  When he stepped back from playing at this level, he was involved in the setting up of the Melville Bridge Academy and produced a lot of materials still used today - particularly the Advanced course that many Melville members have taken. Ill health latterly meant he was no longer able to teach classes himself and he rarely played bridge apart from the annual Flitch tournament for married couples with his wife Lucia Barrett.  Some people may also remember his weekly bridge column in Scotland on Sunday.

All our thoughts are with Lucia at this difficult time."

A friendly guy with a ready wit, Ian was a decent chess player in the late 70s and 80s, and a stalwart of Wandering Dragons for many years. The Edinburgh scene will certainly miss him.
