The GM example is an interesting one, and one we'd all no doubt be happy to wrestle with.
One difficulty is that if the GM (or, to bring it back to the real world, any strong player) joins a club mid season and is selected for the A team the displaced player, in some leagues, will not be able to drop down to the B team if he has already played for the A team, because he's deemed to be an A team player and isn't allowed to 'play down'. The displaced player may therefore not get another game at all during the remainder of the season. That may or may not be the case in the situation to which this thread relates.
