But how many of the audience would have sufficient fluency in Bulgarian to make a valid judgement 

Not really a problem. In Bulgarian tournaments there is obviously no issue and given Ivanov's notoriety I would expect someone to be recording interviews/analysis with an audience/etc. either on video or via mobile phone.
