Recommendation for club website hosting
#1
Long story short, our club site is homeless after our free webhost removed our website without any notice and stated it can only be restored if a paid for account is purchased. Bit of a ransom demand really, and a little bit scammish!

You get what you pay for I guess, so we need to purchase a decent but nothing fancy hosting space, and a domain name also. This is new territory for me as the webmaster of our club site.

I am clearly not a good judge of whats a good webhost. Can someone more knowledgable please give me a recommendation?

Ayrshire use this, <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.one.com/en/">http://www.one.com/en/</a><!-- m --> , free for a year then £1.08 a month. Annual payment.
No problems so far and a helpful staff when it was needed.

<!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.chesshosts.com">www.chesshosts.com</a><!-- w --> - it's designed specifically for Chess organisations and includes a free domain name. Big Grin

Others may be better as chess based butI found Go daddy good as its cheap and you retain all the control/ownership - pre set templates
40% refund fees via topcashback and online discount codes can be used

I set up gilliesandco.co.uk feel free to have a look at it.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I have moved to another free host as a temporary measure, and have registered a domain so I don't have to keep registering the site address with search engines etc. Longer term I am going to get funding for website costs, to move to a paid for host server, it really does seem to be a case of you get what you pay for with this.

Go daddy was around £70 net of refund including .co and .com for 2 years and 5 emails + up to 1000 pages - The reason I like it is I control my own content and hosting + it has ready made templates to change as you see fit - not sure what your budget is like but as I said have a look at gilliesandco.co.uk even for comparing - I do agree you get what you pay for though.

I did look into GoDaddy and your own site Alex, they seem a good middle level host service and their costings and more than competitive. Can't help but be a little put off them though with their controversial owner shooting jungle animals, but not ready to choose a proper paid host yet anyhow given the costs.

Our club has no budget for this at present. I reg'd the co.uk for 2 years at £8 which gives us a stable address at least and is cost effective for the time being along with a free host. Some other clubs have obtained funding for various investments, including website costs so thats the plan, £100 of funding would pay for 3 years of good hosting.

For info, the new free host I'm using is <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.atspace.co.uk/">http://www.atspace.co.uk/</a><!-- m --> appears to be good so far, but then so did the last free web host! Time will tell.

Thanks for info - good luck - the hidden cost I found was time - you can spend hours fiddling with silly things like a logo or how to fix something supposedly simple #annoying.

Oh I know about that Alex! I thought Frames was the norm and set the site up in frames but its all php now and frames is seemingly outdated and despised. And php does not work in frames as I recently discovered. When I checked the site on different browsers to what I use, I then discovered lots of display issues. Now today my css files are not working since I setup the domain.

Some of that may sound familiar, you get there though don't you? Its a bit like the chess world, a few obstacles to overcome and barriers to knock down!
