This was a fine success for the young English representative. Penrose, who was only a few months shy of his 20th birthday, would go on to win the British championship a record ten times.
Four players shared 2nd-5th places, a half-point behind the winner. Fairhurst, Scotland's leading representative, lost only to Yanofsky as a result of a blunder which cost a pawn; thereafter, he could do nothing against Yanofsky's powerful endgame play.
Golombek and Wade, regular visitors to Scotland during their long playing careers, were both very active international players and both were great popularisers of the game. Wade was the only one to win against Penrose.
The Canadian Yanofsky, who had represented Canada at the 1939 Buenos Aires Olympiad when he was 14 years of age, had been studying at Oxford University since 1951. He went on to score a major success later in the year by winning the British championship. He also gained first-class honours in his Bachelor of Civil Law examinations and then headed back to Canada where he had a successful career in law, as well as being very active in civic politics. He became Canada's first Grandmaster in 1964.
Aitken, who won the Scottish championship in April of this year, was normally more reliable, but he lost too many games to be successful in such a short event.
Norman Macleod was a better player than his score suggested, but he suffered from a lack of regular, strong practice. He was a runner-up to Aitken in the 1953 Scottish Championship, held a few months before this event, and he did go on to represent Scotland at the Munich 1958 Olympiad. Shortly after the end of this event Macleod, who worked for the Foreign Office, left for Washington D.C., where his duties were expected to keep him for about two years. Macleod became highly respected in the area of chess problem composition and FIDE awarded him the title of International Grandmaster of Chess Composition posthumously in 1994.
Erwin Knopfler was strong enough to play on board two for Glasgow CC, behind Fairhurst, and he had also been a runner-up to Aitken in the 1953 Scottish Championship. (He also participated in the 1952 and 1954 events.) This would have justified his being given a place in this event, but, like Macleod, all his opponents had much more experience of playing high-level tournament chess. (According to Chess, September 1953, p 225, Knopfler lost his games against Penrose, Golombek and Yanofsky by default.) Knopfler, who died in 1993, aged 84, was the father of Mark and David Knopfler of Dire Straits fame, as pointed out by Douglas Bryson in his Scotland on Sunday column of November 27, 2005.
