Associated with chess in Dundee and area. Member of Dundee Chess Club, but played for the Dundee Liberal Club in the Spens Cup competition in the 1920's. Founded a Dundee and District Chess League in 1924 which, however, was disbanded the following year. Played in the Scottish Championships of 1927, 1928, 1947, 1948 (where he inflicted a rare defeat on Fairhurst), and 1956. Represented Scotland at the Munich Olympiad 1958.

Mr Beckingham is particularly remembered for his encouragement of younger players at Dundee CC, and for the instructional lectures that he gave over many years.
Here is the game referred to above. Perhaps Fairhurst's 38th move was caused by time pressure.
