26 moves. Each move is a brush stroke on a canvas that Da Vinci himself would have been proud to sign.

  Mr A.B. Duthie
Posted by: Alan McGowan - 17-05-2015, 07:41 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (1)

I have received an enquiry from someone in southern California who has come across a chess set previously owned by a Mr A.B. Duthie.
Mr Duthie was listed in the 1948 yearbook of the Scottish Chess Association, his address being 137 Brucefield Ave, Dunfermline.
In the 1951 yearbook he is shown at 21 East Claremont St, Edinburgh, with the same address registered in the 1953-54 yearbook.
The Dunfermline CC web site indicates that Mr Duthie was club champion in 1948.
Does anyone have any further information about this person?
Thanks.

  George Clarke
Posted by: steve smith - 08-05-2015, 12:18 PM - Forum: Obituaries - Replies (2)

Many people will remember George as an enthusiastic member of Stirling Chess Club and an energetic contributor to administration of both the club and Chess Scotland.

Due to deteriorating health he moved several years ago to Mull, where his daughter and her family lived. Despite the distance he maintained his club membership and continued to suggest ideas for the running of the club. He was determined to reach 90 despite having several life-limiting conditions, and typically he achieved that.

Details of the funeral as supplied by his daughter are below :-

Peacefully on 2nd May 2015 at Gormsheil Cottage, Torloisk, Isle of Mull.

Formerly at Blairlogie, Stirling, much loved by daughter Rhona and his
four grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

A secular funeral is to be held at Cardross Crematorium, Cardross,
Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire G82 5HD on 15th May 2015 at 14:15pm.

No flowers by request, donations to Macmillan Cancer support please.
Smart Casual attire - no suits.

Please Join us afterwards at The Coach House Inn, Main Road, Cardross,
Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire G82 5JX.

Three Scots playing in last couple of rounds at moment (see links at CS News Box, including to live games). Good luck!

Currently leading in 65+ section is Jan Rooze (Belgium), who's very friendly with all of the Scots. My title tip!

  An unusual incident
Posted by: Alastair White - 04-05-2015, 08:11 AM - Forum: The Arbiters Jotter - Replies (3)

At the Euro Seniors in Greece.

Yesterday I was watching Douglas McKerracher's game as it approached the time control. His opponent moved his queen and accidentally knocked over his passed pawn on d4. He then picked it up and placed it on d5, one square nearer queening. Neither player noticed the error.

I informed the arbiters who did not appear to believe me at first but after I demonstrated what had happened on a spare board, they went to investigate. After a cursory examination of the scoresheets they fobbed me off again until after the time control had been reached then stopped the clocks and reconstructed the game which proved I was correct. The pawn was repaced on d4 and the game continued from the position reached at the time control.

It may not have affected the outcome but I am interested to know what should have happened. Should the arbiters have intervened at all? Should the game revert to the position where the error was made? How should it have been rectified? Can anyone advise?
