  FIDE Elections

Looks like this is going to be a walk over for AD. Writing was on the wall when he had a meltdown over the Kremlin and Zurab insulted the whole African continent.

Nigel withdrawing and endorsing AD is the final nail in the coffin and I will be very surprised if the result is anything other than a resounding win for the challenger.

Posted by: Alastair White - 24-09-2018, 12:48 PM - Forum: Live Games - Replies (29)

Haven't seen anything opted about this so here goes:

Live games are on Chess24, the official website and no doubt elsewhere. Pairings and results are on chessresults.com. Will post direct links later if no-one else does.

Just started...

Looks like the open teams opponents (Togo) haven't turned up yet, so could be a win by default. In the women's competition Monica's game (vs Gabon) is shown as 1.c4 1-0 so maybe her opponent isn't coming either. Keti is already winning massively after 8 moves or so. Today is not looking very watchable.

  Arran Rapidplay

This Saturday a shiny new tournament in a new place. Park at Ardrossan, £7.80 on the ferry, 5 games of chess, family can be bought of with Brodick castle, perfect.

Entries so far a bit short on what we would like to see, so a nice day out in Arran, then. Big Grin

  Sacrificing (Advances since Tal) - Training event 13-14 October 2018
Posted by: JonathanIMGrant - 05-09-2018, 08:48 AM - Forum: Tournaments and Events - No Replies

Mikhail Tal, “The Magician from Riga” and 8th World Chess Champion, was renowned for his sacrificial ability and beautiful attacking games. Over the last 60 years, the top players developed the theory of sacrificing to deal with massive improvements in defensive techniques.

Typical sacrificial patterns are enjoyable to learn and use in your own games. This training event is intended to help you decide when to sacrifice and how to defend against sacrifices.

The best way to master the art of sacrifice is practice. The primary focus will be on practical application through solving exercises and playing positions after following demonstrated examples. Aimed at all aspiring players prepared to work hard on improving their game, up to titled level. Former Scottish Champion Jonathan Grant, FIDE Trainer, will run the session in conjunction with Edinburgh Chess Club.

Entry: The fee, whether attending one or more sessions, is £49 for adults and £35 for juniors (U18).
Venue: Edinburgh Chess Club, 1 Alva Street, EDINBURGH EH2 4PH
Schedule: Saturday 13 October 2018 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm and Sunday 14 October 2018 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Entry and contact: Neil Berry

Time to turn thoughts toward Dundee - only six weeks to go. Features this year:
New City Centre-ish venue (5 minute walk from High Street);
Decent prizes, low entry fees;
Lots of accommodation options nearby;
Free WiFi throughout the building;
Live boards for the first time;
Breakfast rolls, lunchtime snacks but plenty of eating/drinking options within easy walking;
Lots of parking within 5-10 minutes walk (not free unfortunately);
See the Dundee Congress website, enter online if you like.

Further helpful info will be added to the website in the coming weeks.

  Weighted Chess Set wanted
Posted by: Alex Gillies - 02-09-2018, 11:03 AM - Forum: Swap Shop - No Replies

I'm looking to get weighted chess set, probably rosewood double or triple. Probably 4.2 inch king

They can be expensive, so perhaps someone might be looking to get rid of one of their old sets.  if so let me know.
Thanks

  Inverness Congress
Posted by: JMcNicoll - 31-08-2018, 09:07 AM - Forum: Tournaments and Events - Replies (15)

A week to go until the congress starts and there are only 2 places left in the tournament, (unless you persuade me your presence could greatly enhance the competition).

If you could see your way to one in the U2200 and one in the U1450 that would be good.

The organisers this year are taking more of a back seat this year, by back seat I mean more than 200 miles away, and have left me on my own, so this could get interesting.  Big Grin

Obviously if you arrive early perhaps you could offer a hand in the setting up and putting away of the equipment.

Draws and results will appear on the Chess tour site, there is a link from the front page.

All the games will also appear at a later date, depending on legibility.

See you there.

  CS magazine August 2018
Posted by: andybburnett - 30-08-2018, 08:34 PM - Forum: Announcements - No Replies

Hi all,

Unfortunately this month's issue of CS magazine (August 2018) will be delayed, hopefully by no longer than one week.

Several reasons behind the delay, but I'm hopeful they won't be recurring ones.

Apologies,

Andy Burnett

  Gordon MacDonald
Posted by: Crawford Macnab - 30-08-2018, 06:55 AM - Forum: Obituaries - No Replies

Gordon died on 22nd August after a long illness.
His funeral service will take place at 1.00 p.m. on Friday 31st August at Mortonhall Crematorium Edinburgh (Main Chapel).

He spent his working life in the Inland Revenue (now HM Revenue & Customs).

He was a longstanding member of Edinburgh Civil Service Chess Club for over thirty years.
And for many years was a council member of ELCA (now Chess Edinburgh and Lothians).
Always approachable and a mentor to new members to the club.
He was most famous for playing the stonewall defence which he played with great success as black or white.

Gordon was also a keen bowler and was latterly a member of Slateford Bowling Club, helping to secure this as the current venue for the club.

He will be sorely missed.
