Ayr Congress this weekend and entries so far are disappointing to say the least. If you can or know anyone else requiring a wee push to enter please do, or it may not exist next year.
Pairings and results will be found here.

Shamkovich simul, Edinburgh 1978 |

Does anyone have the detailed results of the Shamkovich simul held at Adam House, Edinburgh on Wednesday, January 18 1978?
I cannot find a report in Scottish Chess or the BCM and Craig Pritchett's Glasgow Herald column of 21 January 1978 only mentioned that the GM scored 67%. Among those playing were Orr, Upton, Norris, Condie and Geoff Chandler (the last named was unable to provide full results).

Hi all,
We are hoping to send two teams to the World Team Chess Championship 50+, 65+ 2018

The tournament will be held in Radebeul, Dresden, Germany from 7th to 15th July.
At the moment we have 6 players, so we still require two more players, preferably for the over 50 team (so, under 65!) but anyone 65+ willing to play in the 50+ event would of course be most welcome.
We are hoping to submit teams as soon as possible in order to allow for booking flights, so please contact me asap if you are interested.
Many thanks,
Andy Burnett

The entry forms are now out.
Byes : " Players wishing a bye must request it on the entry form.In the unlikely event of a player asking for a bye after round 2 then it will not count towards any Championship title."
This is unfair. All rounds of the tournament must be treated equally. Half-point byes must be available in every round if requested in advance.
Many players have family commitments and cannot play all nine rounds. This could be any round, not just rounds 1 & 2.
Some players have to prepare for the Glorney Cup and may wish byes in rounds 8 or 9. It's no wonder that the Glorney team are unsuccessful every year and now have had the debacle of the Spens and Rosebowl. Alex, we are spending £6,000 on the Glorney. Players need time to prepare. I need to give them motivational team talks to lift their spirits which are currently at rock bottom.
Finally, the Scottish Champion has made the Olympiad team, so the title is worth achieving. Let's make it fair for all competitors.

from Jim webster
Following the Management Board meeting on Wednesday 11th April the Glorney Gilbert Festival is under the auspices of the Management Board with Ian Brownlee organizing the day to day administrative duties. Ian will report directly to the Management Board. Andy Howie shall provide additional support to Ian in this undertaking.
Team coaches are allocated to the various groups and selectors have been identified. The coaches are already working on this and carrying out a planned strategy
Final selection invitations will be sent out in the Middle of May with the team announcement on June 1st.
Team selecting are in their final stages and formal invitations will be issued as soon as the selections are complete. We shall announce the final teams when all invitees have replied to their invitation and team teams are finalised.
There are two training days with a possible 3rd day in June once the team is assembled. Invites are already out on this. It is appreciated that this team is getting support from the chess playing community in Scotland.

Some topics of interest from the International Directors report |

There were a couple of topics that particularly caught my eye in the International Director's report attached to the most recent CS committee minutes posted on this website. I wonder if these points are of sufficient interest to the wider membership to merit some discussion here? Specifically what I was thinking about was:
1) Seniors seeking SCO affiliation
Presumably to aid chances of selection for internationals? I'm intrigued who this would be! I hope that rules will not be relaxed. As the demographic for active chess players in Scotland continues to skew into senior territory I hope we do not have our possible team places hijacked by "foreigners". What are the current rules here I wonder? Personally I would hope any proposed changes would go to AGM.
2) No International Budget
I understand the organisation is strapped for cash but I would have thought entry fees for events such as Olympiad of European Championships ought to be close to top of the list of funding priorities. I wonder what is coming ahead of these? I'd appreciate if someone in the know could clarify here or point me towards where this information is shared with the general membership. I am sure this will be of interest to all paid up members like myself.
