What do you understand to be a critical moment in chess?
Posted by: JonathanIMGrant - 04-06-2017, 06:01 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - No Replies

Interested in your opinion.

Critical moments have fascinated Scottish GMs. Both Jonathan Rowson and Jacob Aagaard have written thought provokingly on the subject. I believe Jacob's forthcoming book will expand on his thinking.

When preparing for this weekend's event on "Critical Moments" at Edinburgh Chess Club, Keti and I found players and writers can have quite different opinions. We're asking attendees to complete the following exercise to help their improvement and check their understanding.

In advance, please choose a game that was important to you with a critical moment and send the score with the identified moment(s). PM me or e-mail JonathanIMGrant [at] aol [dot] com.

  Arbiters - Availability etc

Hi,

So, do we have more than we need currently?
I've asked a few times about the courses but not heard anything back.
It would be interesting to better understand the strategy/roadmap on this:
a) How we're placed
b) What the pipeline and approach is training and progression

As can be seen from this story http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-gl...t-40041603 it would appear that a space in the middle of Glasgow is available, if it doesn't cost could the "chess as art" school of thought do something?

Perhaps along the lines of a simul or blitz event?

  Largs Viking Chess Congress
Posted by: Gary McPheator - 25-05-2017, 09:37 AM - Forum: Tournaments and Events - Replies (5)

The congress is now just a month away and full details can be found on the Chess Scotland website. There is still time to take advantage of our offer of a £3 discount if you enter before midnight 2nd June. This discount is in addition to the others we offer for membership of Chess Scotland or another national federation, playing regularly at Largs and for family entries with juniors.

This year we have added free entry prizes for both Stirling and Largs Viking Congresses in 2018, which means players who win their section or a grading prize will get 3 congresses for the price of 1 with junior prize winners also winning these additional prizes. Those who tie for a prize but miss out in a tie-break will receive 2 congresses for the price of 1 with free entry to either Stirling or Largs next year.

The Largs Live Music Festival will be taking place on the same weekend meaning there will be plenty of entertainment away from the chess boards in venues across Largs for those staying over.

Everyone on the Largs Viking team is looking forward to welcoming you all to Largs!

Critical Moments training seminar at Edinburgh Chess Club - 9 to 11 June
Posted by: JonathanIMGrant - 20-05-2017, 08:40 PM - Forum: Tournaments and Events - Replies (1)

Critical Moments chess training seminar

Identifying the critical moment in chess is a difficult skill, problematic even for the strongest GMs. Such opportunities may happen only two or three times a game but can make the difference of an extra half or full point. This training event is intended to help you sense better when the moment has arrived and decide how to act.

The primary focus will be on practical application through solving exercises and playing positions after following demonstrated examples. Aimed at all aspiring players prepared to work hard on improving their game, up to titled level.

Current Scottish Champion GM Keti Arakhamia-Grant and Jonathan Grant, both FIDE Trainers, will run the sessions in conjunction with Edinburgh Chess Club.

Entry:

The fee, whether attending one or more sessions, is £49 for adults and £35 for juniors (U18).

Venue:

Edinburgh Chess Club, 1 Alva Street, EDINBURGH EH2 4PH

Schedule:

Friday 9 June 2017 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Question 2020 Chess Championships 2017/18!
Posted by: 2020Chess - 17-05-2017, 03:47 PM - Forum: Tournaments and Events - Replies (15)

Hi all,

Next season we are hoping to run another team rapid-play tournament in Scotland, you can see details of the last one we held here:

https://docs.google.com/viewerng/viewer?...204th.docx

https://www.chessscotland.com/forum/show...p?tid=1533

Last time we got several universities and a couple of club sides, so we are hoping to build on our success going forward. With that in mind we'd like to ask whether people have any comments/suggestions on when it'd be ideal to take place and where, then hopefully we can come to an arrangement where everyone is able to participate! Smile

Any questions do let me know, and have a look at our website www.2020chess.com !
