  SNCL defaults
Posted by: Glynis Grant - 24-02-2017, 03:10 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (2)

Zebras are defaulting on Sunday due to clash of tourneys. If your team is supposed to play them PLEASE contact Andy Howie to find out if you need to attend for game 1. Game 2 opponents will be able to go home early if you are not needed.

Remember it is possible for other teams to be defaulting individual boards so the five players could probably get a gradable friendly if they are there.

  George Dickson 1939-2017
Posted by: Alan McGowan - 22-02-2017, 09:54 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (1)

I have been advised of the death of George Dickson on 13 February 2017.
Born in Edinburgh, he showed great talent as a junior. He was Scottish Boys' champion in 1955 and a member of Scotland's Glorney Cup team in 1955, 1956 and 1957, scoring 8/8.
He played in several Scottish Championships, coming 2nd behind Dr Aitken in 1957, 1958 and 1961.
George later moved to England, playing with the Metropolitan CC in London and in Middlesex County events.
His brief bio is at <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://chessscotland.com/history/biographies/dickson_g.htm">http://chessscotland.com/history/biogra ... kson_g.htm</a><!-- m -->

SNCL Div 4: Players Wanted!! Sun 26th Feb 2017
Posted by: Marie Shafi - 18-02-2017, 11:03 PM - Forum: Tournaments and Events - Replies (1)

Due to a clash with junior chess events on 26th Feb 2017 “Queen’s Gambit” is looking for 2-3 players for our SNCL Division 4 team.

All abilities most welcome!
Find us on the day or reply to this post!!

SNCL info and venue: http://snclchess.co.uk/2016/06/dates-201...nge-venue/

“Queens Gambit” started as a team for those who support (and transport!) juniors to chess events, but didn’t normally have much opportunity to play real chess themselves (Mums, Dads, club organisers & juniors!).

See this link for our team members to date:
http://chess-results.com/tnr244400.aspx?...t=1&wi=821

Our inspiration is Liz Sams’s who has done so much for junior chess, and recently took the plunge into playing some real chess herself!

  Coaching
Posted by: PeterReidSmith - 18-02-2017, 09:03 PM - Forum: Why don't you? - No Replies

How about a condition that to have your name on the published list of Chess Scotland approved coaches comes with an agreement and expectation to provide 100hrs+ of free coaching activity per year?

The details of what anyone's 100 hrs might be can be at the discretionary approval of the board and/or junior director - e.g. some might already be helping out at schools etc, or occasionally doing even more assisting in events which should obviously count. Still, the principle is reasonable: if our name's on the list then we provide an element of quantifiable free service in support of junior Chess. There would not be any stringent "audit" as such ; it's more about setting clear expectations and honourably delivering on them for the benefit of having the listing - and the support in obtaining the necessary CP certification.

Just a thought.

"Drawn" positions when there is an increment
Posted by: PeterReidSmith - 05-02-2017, 03:04 PM - Forum: The Arbiters Jotter - Replies (7)

I've never been too sure about this, but it has happened to me, so:

Increment - hence, in theory the game can go on forever.
Drawn position, but not trivially - e.g. there might be a fortress, but that might not be evident to everyone. In the particular case I remember I had a Rook+Bishop fortress against a queen and King but there were also pawns on the board. It was "clearly" drawn, but the point is...

the game can just go on and on and on. Three move repetition need never arise ; the 50 move rule (does that even still exist) need never arise (or at least not for many hours) as the odd pawn move can always be made, and any 2 minute rules can be kept at bay by the increment. So...what exactly is the protocol?

In my case, I did call the arbiter (it was 22:30pm and I wanted to get some sleep), but even then it took another 30mins and probably only ended because the other player did eventually concede the draw- probably only due to my demonstrable frustration and having to pseudo repeat moves.

In short...is there an issue here or am I (and I suspect a few others) just ignorant of the correct protocol?
