Hi all
we're going to raise funds for Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team in memory of Tom Brown. It will on the last Monday before Christmas and I was hoping either to do a simul or have a fun Blitz tournament. I was wondering if any strong players (ideally an IM or GM but not required) would perform a simul for us. No fee's but we would arrange a lift to and from Lanark and all the coffee or tea required

A tough start for us over here in Iceland, and despite being buoyed by the news of Craig and Roddy running amok in the Seniors, we couldn't quite replicate the same success here in Reykjavik.
We were up against the strong Georgian team, averaging 2600 over the 4 boards and led by the super-GM Baadur Jobava. I sat out and watched the games live from the hotel nearby, and after a couple of hours play things were looking quite rosy - even later on it looked like we should take a point or 2 from the match.
Alan Tate seemed to be doing OK, Andy Muir was never under pressure while Graeme Morrison's complex position offered good chances too. Steve Mannion's slight advantage had dissipated, but only into what seemed to be a drawn position.
Alas, these 2600 GM's make a living from winning drawish positions, and unfortunately all 4 of our guys went astray. A rather unrepresentative 4-0 loss, as all our boys had played to a high standard barring one dubious move each late in the games.
Tomorrow will see us take on Slovenia - headed by ex-World title Candidate Alexander Belyavsky - and it promises to be another tough match. I will hopefully get my debut (probably as black against a 2540 GM!) and will try my best to help the guys kick-start our campaign.
Reykjavik is an interesting and strangely beautiful place, and the team (including Graham's wife Lynne who many will know from playing in Scotland) have gelled together quite well already. Spirits are high, now we just have to add some points into the mix!
The live games and results can all be accessed here <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://etcc2015.com/open-section/">http://etcc2015.com/open-section/</a><!-- m --> and tomorrow ought to see Carlsen put in an appearance for Norway.

Also contains some wonderful imaginative ways to screw up a King & Queen v King & Rook endings.
White to play.

QxR+ was a better move than the one White actually played.

For a variety of reasons these events didn't happen last year. Can I ask at what stage are the preparations for this year?
The situation requires to be looked at earlier this year with a view to allowing other organisations to run the events on our behalf if necessary. I believe SJC will be running Primary and LJC will be hosting Secondary events so they would seem like the best current options if agreeable by all parties.

FIDE Arena expanding |

At the AGM I tried to ask about what position CS should be taking regarding the FIDE Arena enterprise, but I received rather short shrift. At that time FIDE rating of Arena games as OTB play was already being discussed.
From the ECF we have the following interesting thread <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7895">http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7895</a><!-- m -->
Several points are raised, some of which CS previously discussed under the heading of 'Remote Participation'.
If players were reluctant to risk their CS grades in 'Remote Participation', and they were, how likely is it that they will risk their FIDE rating? Indeed, how will people regard FIDE ratings obtained through FOA play?

Hi all,
Following on from our first Secondary team competition last week - we are now inviting teams to enter our Secondary Team Winter Championships on Sunday the 24th of January.
While our team events are normally only open to Lothians, for this event we would like to invite any Scottish Secondary School or composite team to enter the LJC Secondary Winter Team Championships.
Regarding composites, If you cannot raise a team from the same school, please feel free to enter a composite team made up of children still at School.
More details are available on the LJC website here: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.ljc.org.uk/index.php/events/team/57-secondary-schools-winter-team-championships?date=2016-01-24-09-15">http://www.ljc.org.uk/index.php/events/ ... 1-24-09-15</a><!-- m -->
Thanks,
Martin
